While planning and scheduling things in advance is great, I understand when things come in our way.

So, here’s what I usually do:

  1. I try to prevent distractions in advance. For example, I close the door. I put my phone on airplane mode. If there’s noise around, I’d put headphones with some music on. I do such things for deep work, deep learning, exercise, meditation, etc.
  2. Even after trying my best to prevent distractions, when something urgent comes up, I re-schedule the most important thing(s) to a later time. But I make sure I don’t make excuses like: “I didn’t have the time.” “I could do that because of…”, etc.
  3. Sometimes, when there’s a bigger crisis or emergency, I give myself permission to surrender and let go of the need to be productive until I’ve resolved the issue in my life.
